Sambódromo

The Sambodromo is also known as:

The Marques de Sapucai Avenue.
The Sambadrome in English.
The Sambódromo in Portuguese.

The Sambodromo, the stage of the annual Rio de Janeiro Carnival, will host the Archery events as well as the Marathon’s start and finish.

Sambodromo is an icon, one of Rio’s landmarks. The annual carnival attracts thousands of Brazilians and foreign tourists each year.

The Sambodromo was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and built in 1984. It consists of 700 meter stretch of the Marques de Sapucai Avenue converted into a permanent parade ground with bleachers built on either side for spectators.

The complex includes an area located at the end of the parade route, the Apotheosis Square (Praca da Apoteose), where the bleachers are set further back from the parade area, creating a square. The Apotheosis Square is also used as a major concert venue in Rio de Janeiro. The Apotheosis Square is recognized by the grand arches which marks the location of the Samba Museum. The word “Apotheosis” comes from the Greek word Apotheoun, meaning “to deify” and it has connotations of grandiosity, divinity, exaltation and elevation.

The famous Sambodromo has undergone a major renovation for the Games.

The renovation of the Sambodromo was completed as scheduled and in time for Carnival 2012, and over four years ahead of the Rio 2016 Games. With the renovation, the project created by the infamous architect Oscar Niemeyer is finally completed. Four new grandstands were built on one of the sides of the Sambodromo, similar to those located on the opposite side. These renovations increased the spectator capacity by 18,000 and met Niemeyer's original design of having the Sambadromo a symmetrical complex.

The Sambodromo is the "stadium" of samba.

It consists of the Parading Avenue (the samba runway) and several independent concrete structures for the spectators (the bleachers) on both sides along the Parading Avenue.

Built on the grounds of the recognized birthplace of the samba style of music, the Sambodromo parade route begins at Avenida Presidente Vargas and ends at the Apotheosis Square on Rua Frei Caneca.

Location Descriptions:

Located right at the heart of Rio de Janeiro.
Located close to the Maracanã Stadium.

Rugby Venue

The original plan to stage rugby matches at the São Januário Stadium will have to be scrapped because the club in charge of the venue missed the deadline to present its project. The Organising Committee revealed that they may now move the sport into the João Havelange Stadium, which it would have to share with athletics competitions. It has since been announced that the Rugby competition will take place in a temporary arena at the Deodoro Zone, shared with the Modern Pentathlon.
